Amavasya (New Moon) — Significance, Dos & Don'ts

अमावस्या का महत्व

ShareSharePost

Amavasya (अमावस्या) is the New Moon day — the 15th Tithi of Krishna Paksha — when the Moon is not visible. In Hindu tradition, it is associated with ancestor worship (Pitru Tarpan), introspection, and spiritual practices.

Amavasya is NOT unlucky — it is a powerful day for specific activities: Pitru Tarpan (offerings to ancestors), meditation, Tantra Sadhana, and planting seeds. However, starting new ventures, marriages, and housewarming should be avoided.

Somvati Amavasya (falling on Monday) and Shani Amavasya (falling on Saturday) have special significance. Mahalaya Amavasya (in Ashwin month) is the most important — dedicated entirely to ancestor worship.

Remedies on Amavasya: Light a mustard oil lamp, donate black sesame seeds, feed Brahmins, chant Mahamrityunjaya Mantra.
