What is Kundli (Janam Kundali)?

Kundli (कुंडली), also known as Janam Patrika or birth chart, maps the positions of 9 Vedic planets — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu — at the exact moment and location of birth. These are placed in 12 houses relative to the Ascendant (Lagna), which changes every ~2 hours. Each house governs specific life areas: 1st house (self), 7th house (marriage), 10th house (career). All computation happens in your browser — your birth data is never sent to any server.

What is a Kundli (Janam Kundali)?

A Kundli (कुंडली), also called Janam Kundali or Birth Chart, is the foundational document of Vedic astrology. It is a precise map of the sky at the exact moment and location of your birth, showing the positions of all nine planets (Navagraha) across the 12 houses (Bhava) and 12 zodiac signs (Rashi). Every major life prediction in Jyotish — career, marriage, health, wealth, children, and spiritual growth — begins with reading the Kundli.

The Kundli is divided into 12 houses, each governing a specific area of life. The 1st house (Lagna) represents your personality and physical body. The 7th house governs marriage and partnerships. The 10th house rules career and public reputation. The placement of planets in these houses, their mutual aspects (Drishti), and their relationships with house lords create the unique blueprint of your destiny.

AstroMangal generates your Kundli using the Swiss Ephemeris — the same astronomical engine used by professional astrology software worldwide. We use the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) Ayanamsa, which is the official standard adopted by the Government of India for the Rashtriya Panchang. Your chart includes the Lagna (Ascendant), Rashi (D1), Navamsa (D9), and other divisional charts, along with Vimshottari Dasha periods and full planetary dignity analysis.

Why is Birth Time Important?

The Lagna (Ascendant) changes every 2 hours, which means even twins born minutes apart can have different Kundlis. An inaccurate birth time can place planets in wrong houses, leading to incorrect predictions. If you do not know your exact birth time, check your birth certificate or hospital records. Even an approximate time within 15-30 minutes will produce a reasonably accurate chart.

How to Read Your Kundli

Start by identifying your Lagna (Ascendant sign) — this is the foundation of your chart. Next, check your Moon sign (Rashi) and Moon Nakshatra — these determine your emotional nature and daily predictions. Then examine each planet position: benefic planets (Jupiter, Venus, Mercury, Moon) in Kendra (1,4,7,10) and Trikona (1,5,9) houses are excellent, while malefic planets (Saturn, Mars, Rahu, Ketu) do well in Upachaya houses (3,6,10,11). Finally, check your current Dasha period to understand which planet is most active in your life right now.
