How Kundli Matching Works
Kundli matching evaluates 8 aspects (Ashtakoota): Varna (1pt, spiritual compatibility), Vashya (2pts, mutual attraction), Tara (3pts, birth star harmony), Yoni (4pts, physical compatibility), Graha Maitri (5pts, mental wavelength), Gana (6pts, temperament), Bhakoot (7pts, health & wealth), and Nadi (8pts, genetic compatibility — most critical). Maximum 36 points. Score 0-17 = Not recommended, 18-24 = Acceptable, 25-32 = Very Good, 33-36 = Excellent.
Understanding Ashtakoota Kundli Matching
Kundli Matching (कुंडली मिलान) is the Vedic system of evaluating marriage compatibility between two individuals. The Ashtakoota method examines 8 aspects (Kutas) of compatibility based on the birth Nakshatras of the boy and girl, assigning points totaling 36 Gunas. A score of 18 or above is considered acceptable for marriage, 25+ is very good, and 32+ is considered an excellent match.
The 8 Kutas are: Varna (1 point) — spiritual compatibility and ego levels; Vashya (2 points) — mutual attraction and dominance; Tara (3 points) — destiny and health compatibility; Yoni (4 points) — physical and sexual compatibility; Graha Maitri (5 points) — mental compatibility and friendship; Gana (6 points) — temperament matching (Deva, Manushya, Rakshasa); Bhakoot (7 points) — emotional and financial compatibility; and Nadi (8 points) — health of progeny and genetic compatibility.
Nadi Dosha is the most critical factor — if both partners have the same Nadi (Aadi, Madhya, or Antya), it creates Nadi Dosha which traditional texts consider a serious obstacle. However, there are several cancellation rules: if the partners have the same Rashi but different Nakshatras, or same Nakshatra but different Rashis, the Dosha is significantly reduced.
Beyond Gun Milan — What Else Matters
While Ashtakoota matching is important, experienced astrologers also examine Mangal Dosha (Mars placement), the 7th house lord and its placement, Venus position (for marital happiness), Jupiter (for wisdom and children), and the overall strength of both charts. A score of 20/36 with strong 7th house compatibility can be better than 30/36 with a heavily afflicted 7th house. AstroMangal shows both the Guna score and Mangal Dosha status for both partners to give you a complete picture.
