What is Chalisa?
Chalisa (चालीसा) is a devotional prayer consisting of forty verses (chaupai). The word Chalisa is derived from the Hindi word "Chalees" meaning forty. These hymns are composed in praise of Hindu deities and are recited daily by millions of devotees across India and the world. The most popular is Hanuman Chalisa, written by Goswami Tulsidas in the 16th century, which is chanted over 100 million times daily worldwide. Each Chalisa begins with a Doha (couplet) and is followed by 40 Chaupais (quatrains) describing the glory, powers, and benevolence of the deity. Regular recitation of Chalisa is believed to bring divine blessings, protection from evil, fulfillment of wishes, and spiritual growth.
