Understanding Vimshottari Dasha — Planetary Periods
The Vimshottari Dasha is the most widely used planetary period system in Vedic astrology, dividing your life into cycles totaling 120 years. Each cycle is ruled by one of the nine planets in a fixed sequence: Ketu (7 years), Venus (20 years), Sun (6 years), Moon (10 years), Mars (7 years), Rahu (18 years), Jupiter (16 years), Saturn (19 years), and Mercury (17 years).
Your starting Dasha at birth is determined by the Moon Nakshatra — specifically, how far the Moon has traveled through that Nakshatra at birth. The remaining portion of the first Dasha is calculated proportionally. For example, if you are born when the Moon has traversed half of a Nakshatra ruled by Venus, you begin life with 10 years of Venus Dasha remaining.
Each Mahadasha is subdivided into Antardasha (sub-periods) following the same planetary sequence. The results of a Dasha period depend on the planet natural nature, its placement in your birth chart, the houses it rules, and its relationship with other planets. A well-placed Jupiter Mahadasha brings wisdom, children, and spiritual growth, while an afflicted Saturn Mahadasha may bring career challenges that ultimately lead to greater resilience.
