Guru Purnima — Significance, Date 2026, Rituals & Spiritual Importance

Guru Purnima is celebrated on the Full Moon (Purnima) of the Hindu month Ashadha (June-July). It is the day dedicated to honoring gurus (teachers) — both spiritual and academic. The word 'Guru' comes from Sanskrit: 'Gu' means darkness, 'Ru' means remover — a guru is one who removes the darkness of ignorance.

Significance: Guru Purnima marks the birth anniversary of Maharishi Vyasa — the sage who compiled the four Vedas, wrote the Mahabharata, and composed the 18 Puranas. It is also called Vyasa Purnima in his honor.

In the Buddhist tradition, this day marks the occasion when Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon at Sarnath to his five disciples — known as Dharma Chakra Pravartana.

In the Yogic tradition, Lord Shiva is considered the Adi Guru (first teacher) who began transmitting the science of Yoga to the Saptarishis (seven sages) on this day.

Astrological significance: Guru Purnima falls during the Sun's transit through Gemini-Cancer, when the Moon is full. Jupiter (Guru) is at its brightest benefic influence during this period. Starting spiritual practices on Guru Purnima is considered extremely auspicious.
