Vedic vs Western Astrology — Key Differences Explained
वैदिक बनाम पश्चिमी ज्योतिष
Vedic (Jyotish) and Western astrology are two distinct systems with fundamental differences in calculation, interpretation, and emphasis.
1. Zodiac System: Vedic uses the Sidereal zodiac (fixed stars), Western uses the Tropical zodiac (seasons). The difference (Ayanamsa) is currently ~24°, which is why your Vedic sign may differ from your Western sign.
2. Primary Reference: Vedic astrology prioritizes the Moon sign (Rashi) for predictions. Western astrology uses the Sun sign. This is the biggest practical difference.
3. Dasha System: Vedic astrology uses planetary period systems like Vimshottari Dasha (120-year cycle) for timing predictions. Western astrology uses transits and progressions.
4. Houses: Vedic uses the Whole Sign house system (each house = one sign). Western commonly uses Placidus or Koch systems with unequal house sizes.
5. Planets: Vedic considers Rahu and Ketu (lunar nodes) as planets. Western astrology includes Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto which Vedic traditionally doesn't use.
6. Nakshatras: Vedic uses 27 Nakshatras (lunar mansions) which have no equivalent in Western astrology. Nakshatras add a layer of precision absent in Western systems.
