मंगल दोष — अर्थ, प्रभाव और उपाय

Mangal Dosha, also known as Kuja Dosha or Manglik Dosha, is one of the most discussed conditions in Vedic astrology, especially in the context of marriage matching. It occurs when the planet Mars (Mangal) is placed in certain houses of the birth chart (Kundli). Specifically, if Mars occupies the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house from the Ascendant (Lagna), Moon, or Venus, the person is said to be Manglik.

Contrary to popular belief, Mangal Dosha is extremely common — approximately 40-50% of all people have some form of it. The severity varies greatly depending on the house Mars occupies and the aspects of other planets. Mars in the 7th or 8th house is generally considered more significant than Mars in the 1st or 12th house.

Effects of Mangal Dosha on Marriage

The primary concern with Mangal Dosha relates to married life. Mars is a fiery, aggressive planet associated with energy, passion, and sometimes conflict. When Mars influences the 7th house (the house of marriage and partnerships), it can indicate a temperamental nature, frequent disagreements with the spouse, or delays in finding a compatible partner.

However, astrologers recognize several important exceptions. The dosha is considered cancelled (Mangal Dosha Bhang) in certain scenarios: if both partners are Manglik, the effects neutralize each other. If Mars is in its own sign (Aries or Scorpio) or exalted sign (Capricorn), the negative effects are significantly reduced. Jupiter's aspect on Mars is also considered a powerful neutralizer.

Effects in Different Houses

Mars in the 1st House creates an aggressive personality that may struggle with patience in relationships. Mars in the 2nd House can cause harsh speech and financial disagreements. Mars in the 4th House may bring domestic unrest and property disputes. Mars in the 7th House is the most significant placement, potentially causing friction with the spouse. Mars in the 8th House can indicate health concerns or sudden changes in married life. Mars in the 12th House may cause excessive spending or sleep disturbances.

Vedic Remedies for Mangal Dosha

Several traditional remedies are prescribed for Mangal Dosha. Kumbh Vivah is the most well-known remedy, where a Manglik person is first symbolically married to a banana tree (for men) or a silver/clay idol of Vishnu (for women) before the actual wedding. Chanting the Mangal mantra — Om Angarakaya Namah — 108 times daily, especially on Tuesdays, is widely recommended.

Other remedies include fasting on Tuesdays and donating red items such as red cloth, red lentils (masoor dal), or coral gemstones. Visiting Hanuman temples on Tuesdays and Saturdays is also considered beneficial since Hanuman is associated with Mars. Some astrologers recommend wearing a red coral (Moonga) gemstone after proper consultation.

When Does Mangal Dosha End?

A common question is whether Mangal Dosha has an expiry date. According to most classical texts, the intensity of Mangal Dosha reduces significantly after the age of 28. Some traditions hold that it becomes negligible after 28, though this varies by astrological school.

The bottom line is that Mangal Dosha should be evaluated in the context of the entire birth chart, not in isolation. A qualified Vedic astrologer will consider the strength of Mars, aspects from benefic planets, the Navamsa chart, and other factors before pronouncing the severity of the dosha.
