Mundan Sanskar (first haircut ceremony) is one of the 16 Samskaras in Hindu tradition. It is typically performed when the child is between 1-3 years old, during an auspicious Muhurat.

Best months for Mundan: The odd months from the child's birth month — 3rd, 5th, or 7th month after the first birthday. Avoid even months. Chaitra, Vaishakha, Jyeshtha, and Magha months are generally favorable.

Nakshatras suitable for Mundan: Ashwini, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Jyeshtha, Shravana, Dhanishtha, Shatabhisha, Revati.

The Mundan ceremony should be performed during Shukla Paksha (waxing moon). The child's birth Nakshatra day should be avoided. The ceremony involves shaving the child's head completely and offering the hair at a holy river or temple.
