Shadbala — How to Measure Planetary Strength in Your Kundli
षड्बल — कुंडली में ग्रहों की शक्ति कैसे मापें
Shadbala (Six Strengths) is the most comprehensive system for measuring planetary strength in Vedic astrology. It assigns numerical strength values to each planet based on six different criteria, giving a total score that determines how effectively a planet can deliver its results.
The six components of Shadbala:
1. Sthana Bala (Positional Strength): Based on the planet's sign placement — exaltation gives maximum strength, debilitation gives minimum. Also includes Moolatrikona, own sign, and friendly sign positions.
2. Dig Bala (Directional Strength): Each planet gains strength in a specific direction. Jupiter and Mercury are strong in the East (1st house), Sun and Mars in the South (10th house), Saturn in the West (7th house), Moon and Venus in the North (4th house).
3. Kala Bala (Temporal Strength): Strength based on time — day/night birth, weekday, month, year, and hora. Diurnal planets (Sun, Jupiter, Venus) are stronger during the day; nocturnal planets (Moon, Mars, Saturn) are stronger at night.
4. Chesta Bala (Motional Strength): Based on planetary speed and motion. Retrograde planets gain Chesta Bala. Stationary planets (about to go retrograde or direct) have maximum Chesta Bala.
5. Naisargika Bala (Natural Strength): Inherent strength of each planet — Sun is strongest, followed by Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn in descending order.
6. Drik Bala (Aspectual Strength): Strength gained or lost through aspects from benefic and malefic planets.
Minimum required Shadbala: Each planet needs a minimum Rupa value to effectively deliver results. If a planet's total Shadbala is below the minimum threshold, its Dasha period may bring challenges in the areas it governs.
