Vimshottari Dasha (विंशोत्तरी दशा) — The Planetary Period System Explained
Vimshottari Dasha is the most used planetary period system spanning 120 years, assigning specific periods to each planet.
## The 9 Mahadasha Periods
Sun: 6 years — Authority, father, government. Moon: 10 years — Emotions, mother, public life. Mars: 7 years — Energy, property, courage. Rahu: 18 years — Obsession, foreign elements, unconventional growth. Jupiter: 16 years — Wisdom, expansion, children. Saturn: 19 years — Discipline, karma, hard work. Mercury: 17 years — Intelligence, business, communication. Ketu: 7 years — Detachment, spirituality, sudden events. Venus: 20 years — Love, luxury, marriage.
## How It's Calculated
Starting Dasha is determined by Moon's Nakshatra at birth. The remaining balance is calculated from Moon's exact position. Planets follow the sequence: Sun → Moon → Mars → Rahu → Jupiter → Saturn → Mercury → Ketu → Venus.
## Antardasha (Sub-periods)
Each Mahadasha divides into 9 Antardashas. The Mahadasha lord sets the theme; Antardasha lord modifies results.
## Rahu Mahadasha
Lasts 18 years and is often feared. But well-placed Rahu Dasha brings tremendous material success in technology, foreign connections, and unconventional fields.
