How this muhurta is determined
Surgical timing is the one muhurta the tradition itself subordinates: the texts placed the vaidya's judgement first, and so do we — the muhurta chooses only among dates medicine has already approved. Within that set, Ashwini (the Ashwini Kumaras are the gods' own physicians) and Shatabhisha ("the hundred healers") are the stars most linked to successful treatment.
One classical refinement worth knowing: the Moon should ideally not occupy the sign ruling the body part being operated on (the kalapurusha mapping — Aries the head, Taurus the face and throat, down to Pisces the feet).
