🛕 Which day is auspicious to begin my teerth yatra?

तीर्थ यात्रा का शुभ मुहूर्त • computed from live planetary positions

हिन्दी में पढ़ें →

Begin a teerth yatra on Pushya, Punarvasu, Shravana, Anuradha or Revati, ideally Monday or Thursday. Unlike worldly travel, sacred tithis are welcomed — Ekadashi and Purnima departures are considered to multiply the yatra's fruit. Panchak still restricts southward departures (relevant for Rameshwaram or the southern dhams).

How this muhurta is determined

Pilgrimage inverts one worldly rule: dates that ordinary muhurta reserves for fasting and worship — Ekadashi, Purnima — are excellent for setting out toward a teerth, because the journey itself is worship. Amavasya departures are acceptable for pitru-teerths (Gaya, ancestral rites) specifically.

The Moon rules pilgrims (it rules the mind that seeks), so Monday departures are loved, and your personal chandrabal still applies — a Chandrashtama departure sours even a sacred road with missed connections and short tempers.

For yatras to the south (Rameshwaram, Tirupati from the north), let Panchak pass. For hill shrines (Kedarnath, Vaishno Devi), tradition adds a practical rule that needs no panchang: begin the climb early in the day, in daylight's first Choghadiya.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I start a pilgrimage on Ekadashi?

Yes — beautifully so. Ekadashi is Vishnu's tithi, and beginning a teerth yatra on it is traditionally said to double the merit. Many yatris deliberately time the departure to Ekadashi and reach the shrine by Purnima.

Do the travel restrictions like disha shoola apply to pilgrimage?

The directional rules (disha shoola, Panchak-south) formally apply, but tradition is gentler with sacred travel — the accepted remedy of consuming the weekday item before leaving is considered fully sufficient for a teerth departure.
