Travel on a movable (chara) or light nakshatra — Ashwini, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Anuradha, Shravana or Revati — avoiding your Chandrashtama days and the disha shoola direction for that weekday: east on Monday/Saturday, north on Tuesday/Wednesday, south on Thursday, west on Sunday/Friday.

How this muhurta is determined

Yatra muhurta has one rule the others lack: DIRECTION. Disha shoola — the "thorn" direction — shifts by weekday, and setting out into it is the classic travel misstep. If a journey into the shoola direction cannot move, tradition offers the upaya of consuming the day's named item before leaving (dahi on Monday, jaggery on Wednesday, and so on) and stepping out after.

Panchak adds a second directional rule: southward journeys are specifically avoided during the five Panchak nakshatras. Long or important journeys also prefer the Moon strong for the traveller — never begin a yatra on your Chandrashtama, when accidents of judgement (missed trains, wrong turns, quarrels en route) cluster.

For the return leg, tradition is lenient: coming HOME is always permitted — the rules above govern setting out. If your outbound day is forced, travel light on ritual: leave in a Shubh or Amrit Choghadiya, outside Rahu Kaal, and let the first step be with the right foot.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is disha shoola and what if I must travel that way?

Disha shoola is the inauspicious travel direction for each weekday (east Mon/Sat, north Tue/Wed, south Thu, west Sun/Fri). If unavoidable, the traditional remedy is to consume the weekday's prescribed item before departure — and leave outside Rahu Kaal in a good Choghadiya.

Is returning home also restricted?

No — yatra muhurta governs setting out. Returning to your own home is treated as inherently auspicious and needs no muhurta, though avoiding your Chandrashtama for any long drive remains sensible.
