Basant Panchami celebrates the arrival of spring and honors Goddess Saraswati — the deity of knowledge, music, and arts. It falls on the Panchami (5th day) of Shukla Paksha in Magha month (January-February).

Yellow is the color of Basant Panchami — representing the blooming mustard fields of spring. Devotees wear yellow clothes, eat yellow rice, and offer yellow flowers to Saraswati. This is the most auspicious day to begin education — children are introduced to reading and writing (Vidya Arambha/Akshar Abhyas).

Saraswati Puja involves placing books, musical instruments, and pens near the goddess's idol. Students pray for academic success, artists for creative inspiration, and musicians for skill enhancement.

In many parts of India, Basant Panchami marks the beginning of Holi preparations — 40 days before Holi, the bonfire wood collection begins. It is also considered highly auspicious for weddings and new ventures.

Astrologically, the Sun transitions toward its exaltation in Aries during this period, bringing warmth and new energy to all zodiac signs.
