Ekadashi Vrat — Significance, Dates 2026 & Fasting Rules
एकादशी व्रत
Ekadashi is the 11th Tithi (lunar day) in each fortnight — occurring twice monthly (Shukla and Krishna Paksha). It is the most widely observed fasting day in Hinduism, dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
There are 24 Ekadashis in a year (sometimes 26 in a leap year). Each Ekadashi has a unique name and significance: Nirjala Ekadashi (the strictest — no food or water), Papankusha Ekadashi, Devshayani Ekadashi, and others.
Ekadashi fasting rules: Begin fasting from sunrise on Ekadashi and break fast after sunrise on Dwadashi (12th Tithi). Food restrictions: avoid grains, rice, beans, and certain vegetables. Fruits, milk, and nuts are permitted.
Scientific perspective: The Ekadashi fast aligns with the Moon's gravitational effects on body fluids, supporting detoxification.
