Guru Purnima 2026 — Date, Significance & Celebration
गुरु पूर्णिमा 2026
Guru Purnima is celebrated on the full moon day (Purnima) of Ashadha month, honoring teachers, mentors, and spiritual guides. It commemorates the birthday of Sage Vyasa — who compiled the Vedas, wrote the Mahabharata, and composed the Puranas.
In Vedic tradition, the Guru (teacher) is placed even above God: 'Guru Brahma, Guru Vishnu, Guru Devo Maheshwara' — the guru is Brahma (creator), Vishnu (preserver), and Shiva (transformer).
Students offer Guru Dakshina (tribute) to their teachers. In ashrams and spiritual organizations, this is the most important day for initiation (Deeksha) and receiving blessings. Buddhist tradition calls this day Dharma Day — when Buddha gave his first sermon at Sarnath.
Astrologically, the Ashadha Purnima falls when the Moon is in Uttara Ashadha or Shravana nakshatra — both associated with wisdom and learning. Jupiter (Guru/Brihaspati) is the planet of wisdom, making this day especially powerful for spiritual growth.
