Karva Chauth 2026 — Date, Vrat Vidhi, Moon Time & Significance

Karva Chauth is a one-day fast observed by married Hindu women for the longevity and well-being of their husbands. It falls on the Chaturthi (4th day) of Krishna Paksha in Kartik month, four days after Purnima.

The fast begins before sunrise (Sargi — a pre-dawn meal prepared by the mother-in-law) and ends after sighting the Moon at night. The fast-breaking ritual involves looking at the Moon through a sieve, then looking at the husband's face, and drinking water offered by him.

The Moon rise time is critical — it varies by city. In North India, the Moon typically rises between 8:00 PM and 9:30 PM on Karva Chauth. Women apply mehndi, wear red/pink attire, and gather for evening puja.

Puja Vidhi: Listen to the Karva Chauth Katha, offer water to the Moon, pray to Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva. The earthen karva (pot) symbolizes the cycle of giving and receiving.

Astrological basis: The Moon represents mind and emotions. Fasting on Chaturthi when the Moon is in waning phase is believed to channel lunar energy toward the husband's health.
