Maha Shivratri 2026 — Date, Puja Vidhi, Fasting & Significance
महाशिवरात्रि 2026
Maha Shivratri — the Great Night of Lord Shiva — is celebrated on the Chaturdashi (14th day) of Krishna Paksha in Phalguna/Magha month. It is the darkest night of the year, symbolizing the triumph of consciousness over ignorance.
Unlike other festivals celebrated during the day, Shivratri is observed through night-long vigil (Jagran). Devotees fast, chant Om Namah Shivaya, pour milk and water over the Shiva Lingam, and offer Bilva (Bael) leaves, Dhatura flowers, and Bhang.
Four Prahar (time periods) divide the night, each with a specific puja. The Lingabhishekam (ritual bathing of Shivalingam) is performed with milk, honey, curd, ghee, rose water, and sandalwood paste.
Spiritual significance: Shivratri marks the night when Shiva performed the Tandava (cosmic dance of creation and destruction). It is also the night Shiva married Parvati. Yogis consider this the most powerful night for meditation and spiritual practices.
