Raksha Bandhan 2026 — Date, Muhurat & Significance
रक्षा बंधन 2026
Raksha Bandhan (Rakhi) celebrates the sacred bond between brothers and sisters. Sisters tie a protective thread (Rakhi) on their brother's wrist, and brothers pledge to protect them. It falls on the full moon day (Purnima) of Shravana month.
The Rakhi tying ceremony should be performed during an auspicious Muhurat — ideally during Aparahna Kaal (afternoon) and avoiding Bhadra period. If Bhadra falls during the daytime, the ritual should be postponed until Bhadra ends.
Historical references: Draupadi tying a strip of cloth on Krishna's wrist (he protected her in the court of Kauravas). Queen Karnavati of Mewar sending Rakhi to Mughal Emperor Humayun for protection.
Modern celebration: Sisters tie Rakhi, perform aarti, apply tilak on brother's forehead. Brothers give gifts and sweets. The festival has expanded beyond biological siblings to include cousins, friends, and soldiers.
