👶 Which date is auspicious for my baby's naamkaran?

नामकरण संस्कार का शुभ मुहूर्त • computed from live planetary positions

हिन्दी में पढ़ें →

Naamkaran is classically held on the 11th or 12th day after birth (or the 101st, or the first birthday where family custom keeps it), on a swift or fixed nakshatra, avoiding Rikta tithis and Bhadra. The name's first syllable comes from the baby's janma nakshatra pada — find it with our Nakshatra Finder.

How this muhurta is determined

The naming sanskar fixes the sound the child will answer to for life, and the tradition ties that sound to the sky at birth: each pada of each nakshatra owns a syllable (Ashwini's four padas give Chu-Che-Cho-La, and so on). A name beginning with the janma-pada syllable is said to sit in harmony with the child's own Moon.

The ceremony's date follows the ordinary auspicious-start rules once past the customary day-count: good tithi, good star, no Bhadra at the hour of whispering the name. The father or grandmother whispering the chosen name into the baby's right ear, thrice, is the sealing act.

Where the 11th/12th day lands badly on the panchang, tradition explicitly permits the next clean day — the day-count is a starting custom, not a trap. Check the specific date in CHECK mode below.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find my baby's naming syllable?

From the janma nakshatra and its pada — computed from the birth date, time and place. Our free Nakshatra Finder gives both, along with the syllables for that pada; choose any name beginning with one of them.

The 12th day falls on Amavasya. What now?

Shift to the next favourable day — the texts themselves prefer a clean day over a strict count. The 13th or 15th day on a good tithi honours the sanskar fully.
