How this muhurta is determined
Foundations demand the sthira (fixed) stars above all — what is begun under them endures. The pujan seeks the permission of Bhumi Devi and the removal of Vastu Purusha's displeasure; the first spade of earth is the muhurta's sealing act.
Roofing and slab-laying, whenever they come later, must separately avoid Panchak — this is the stage the Panchak prohibition names explicitly. Keep this page bookmarked for that milestone too.
The direction of first digging is traditionally the northeast (Ishan) corner, after the pujan at the same spot. Tuesday digging is avoided — Mars in the earth breeds disputes over the land itself.

Is bhoomi pujan needed for renovation too?

Which corner of the plot is dug first?
The northeast (Ishan) corner — the direction of water and the deities — after the pujan there. Digging then proceeds so that the northeast stays the lowest and cleanest part of the site.
